It was a joy to work on this project, my first editorial photo illustration for The New York Times. In his article "A Writer’s Lament: The Better You Write, the More You Will Fail", Stephen Marche discusses the lives of successful writers, which he argues are largely shot through with failure, with only comparitvely brief moments of success. I focused on Joyce, Melville, and Socrates for my illustration concepts, as they were mentioned prominently in the article. My re-cover of the "snotgreen" first edition of Ulysses shows a new take on a classic Joyce title. See below for some other fun killed concepts!
Many thanks to Matt Dorfman for the thoughtful art direction and for trusting me with this first NYT assignment.
